If your own weapons are safe to use for practice and sparring, why use PVC wrapped in tape for this?
ReplyDeleteLOL for one there is just a small liability exposure if they don't control the weapons. I think you may need to define safe compared to others definitions. It is much easier to supply a standard set of sparring weapons than to try to establish the suitability of the homemade or store bought practice weapons on a individual basis the day of the competition. IMHO This system has worked for the last 7 years, I don't think it will change.
ReplyDeleteHi Jordan. The Cold Steel Challenge is an open competition. There are no weight categories and anyone over the age of 18 is welcome to compete. Safety is of course a very real consideration. We spar with a wide range of weapons here at Cold Steel (from the foam padded PVC pipe used in the Challenge to Polypropylene weapons, aluminium and even steel) we found - through a great deal of practise - that the foam wrapped PVC pipe was painful enough to demand respect whilst safe enough to use at a competition where anyone can enter. Anyone who has been hit by one of our "foam trainers" knows these things are still very capable and effective weapons. Also, as Scott rightly says we have hundreds of competitors and by producing our own weapons and providing them for the fighters on the day we can get straight into the fighting without assessing every weapon for every fighter.
ReplyDeleteI hope that helps

You won't go wrong with any of our Tomahawks. All are well made, well balanced (great for throwing) and very reasonably priced.
