Bug Out Bag - Contest Winners

We had a huge response to our recent Facebook "B.O.B" contest.
It was awesome to see so many of our fans share our enthusiasm for preparedness!

‎1st Place - Matthew Mann
Lynn thought Matthew had a really interesting and thorough B.O.B set up that showed a lot of thought and some really interesting choices. He also really liked the duracoated blowgun / walking stick.
Matthews B.O.B not only showed a lot of planning but a high level of customization to suit his personal needs. Very impressive.

Matthew described his B.O.B for us:
The total weight of the pack and all of the contents is 25lbs so it should be comfortable to carry for quite some distance.
Anything MultiCam you see in the photo is my own custom sewing,DuraCoating and Kydex.
I modified the Trail Master by removing the top of the guard, wrapping the handle in gutted 550 cord, and adding a shock-cord lanyard. The sheath is my own custom Kydex sheath which I DuraCoated and then added a pouch. The pouch contains snelled fish hooks in an ABS tube, a Lansky retractable diamond rod sharpener, a Light-My-Fire firesteel and a Photon light.
The X2 Voyager has Nutnfancy's recommended modification; I filled in the texture under the pocket clip with epoxy and sanded it flush.
The grappling hook is a 14/0 treble hook and it's not intended for climbing or rapelling, but rather for stabilization on steep terrain and possibly for swinging over crevases or streams.
The Figure 8 rescue descender is intended to be used with rope that I might come across rope while traveling. I've tried it with 550 cord and the 550 cord will hold my weight, but it stretches a bit and I have to loop it through the Figure 8 several times before I can lower myself slowly. The Figure 8 would be used in conjunction with one of the locking carabiners on my pack and my "last chance" belt - which I always wear outside.
I trust maps more than GPS. The case (which I made) contains 1:24,000 maps of my area as well as protractors, measuring devices and a red photon light. There are pace-counting beads hanging from the D-ring on the right shoulder strap of the backpack (not visible in photo).
The copper wire is for cooking meat over a fire. Rather than using a stick that can burn through, the copper will last indefinitely and can be bent to any shape necessary. I also weave the copper wire around the fishing net (in canteen cup) to hold it open and to be a handle for catching minnows.
The rat traps have 550 cord for attaching to trees or rocks so a larger catch doesn't walk away with the trap
The First Aid kit includes band aids, waterproof tape, antiseptic wipes, alcohol pads, benzoin tincture, moleskin, q-tips, rehydration salts, gauze pads, aspirin, a CPR shield, Neosporin, vinyl gloves, burn gel, clippers, nail clippers, scissors, a digital thermometer, and a needle and thread for sutures.— with Cold Steel BBBG Bamboo Darts, GI Poncho, Camo face mask with vents over eyes and mouth holes, Cold Steel Big Bore Blowgun 4' with DuraCoat (4 darts go inside while walking), Grappling hook w/ 50' 550 cord, Nitrile gloves, Silva Ranger compass, Bungee cords, 550 cord and rope to make shelter using poncho, 25x Zoom Telescope, Camera case w/spare batteries and tripod. Rat traps for small game, Fishing license, Handmade MOLLE hydration pack with pouches attached, Cold Steel K4 Neck Knife, Copper wire for cooking, Map case w/ local USGS maps and tools, Gerber Exchange-A-Blade saw, Cold Steel X2 Voyager, Toilet paper in ZipLoc bag, Rite-In-The-Rain notepad and pencil, Lansky diamond rod knife sharpener, ABS tube with fishing line and snelled hooks, Bullion cubes, Light-My-Fire firesteel, Cold Steel Trail Master Kydex sheath w/accessory pouch, PowerBar and cocoa mix, Cold Steel Trail Hawk with custom sheath and 550 wrap, Canteen cup w/ spoon and tinder and small fishing net, Grabber hand and toe warmers, Cold Steel Trail Master San Mai III w/ mods, Photon light, MSR MiniWorks water filter, Pocket Bible (OT and NT), Book: "Edible Wild Plants", Figure 8 rescue descender for rapelling, $1 coins, Zippo w/ DuraCoat, Key-silencer pouch, Zippo Fluid, Bushmaster P97S w/ DuraCoat, Petzl TacTikka w/ red lens and spare batteries, Waterproof First Aid kit (Underwater Kinetics box), custom chest rig w/Sig P226 & M4 magazines (designed specifically to be worn comfortably unde, Ear plugs, Mosquito headnet and First Aid kit tools and thermometer.

Matthew wins a rare discontinued Mini Bushman with Leather Sheath and a copy of Never Unarmed

‎2nd Place - Derick Myer
Lynn thought this was a good B.O.B which again showed a lot of thought. He said it seemed like a genuine "grab it in an emergency" B.O.B with great potential.

Derick described his B.O.B for us:
